How Do Geothermal Systems Work?
The reality is this: Geothermal systems are very simple. No matter the climate or where you are in the world, the ground temperature a few feet below the surface essentially remains a constant throughout the year. During the colder months heat is extracted from the earth loop in the ground and then distributed by a standard duct or radiant floor system. During the warmer months this process is reversed. Heat is extracted from the air in your home and is transferred to the ground or your hot water heater and replaced by cooler air.
Horizontal LoopsHorizontal loops work best where space allows, or on lots with larger acreage. The loops can be buried in trenches ranging from 3 to 6 feet deep. The hot and cold air transitions then take place horizontally before entering and leaving the home.

Pond LoopPond Loops work best when a nearby body of water is available, whether natural or man-made. The sealed piping loop is then submerged under the surface of the water in order to transport the hot and cold air to and from the house.
|
Vertical LoopVertical loops work best where space is limited, or on small acreage lots. The sealed piping is then inserted vertically between 150 and 400 feet below the ground. The hot and cold air transitions are then transported vertically to and from the house.

Well Water LoopWhere ground water is abundant and in good quality, a well water loop can be used in application. In this case, as opposed to installing a sealed piping loop, well water can be used to help transport the hot and cold air to and from the house.
